Kane County adopted the Greenest Region Compact (GRC), the largest sustainability collective of communities in the United States, in 2019. Communities within the GRC began the process of creating a Regional Climate Action Plan later that year. The Climate Action Planning Process is led by the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus, with support from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the European Union in partnership with the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy. The Regional Climate Action Plan aims to reduce the impacts of climate change and build thriving, resilient communities.

Local government entities of all sizes can make decisions and take actions that reduce risks, slow climate change, and protect our communities. The Chicago Regional Climate Action Plan will connect these local actions to critical global targets for GHG reduction to amplify our collective impact on climate change.

Kane County has taken an active role in the Climate Action Planning process to collaborate with surrounding communities and highlight our communities' concerns. This plan will join the GRC communities with 9,200 global cities and 131 countries working to build sustainable and livable communities.

In August, 2022, Kane County engaged paleBLUEdot for support in establishing climate action goals and in the development of a Climate Action Implementation Plan outlining strategies and actions in support of achieving those climate goals. This Plan is the result

and was developed in collaboration with the County’s

Climate Action Implementation Team (CAIT).

The planning process includes evaluating the regional greenhouse gas inventory compiled by CMAP, conducting a Climate Risk and Vulnerability Assessment, Kane County Ground Cover Heat Island and Carbon Sequestration Study, a Renewable Resources Assessment, a Climate Action Baseline Assessment and ultimately forming the Kane County Climate Action Implementation Plan (CAIP) which seeks to be a tool supporting Kane County, its communities, businesses, and residents in identifying and implementing actions to increase our resilience and meet climate goals.
