Kane County Water Resources has been working with scientific experts, elected officials and community leaders to promote an understanding of the water supply available to the residents and businesses of Kane County. With an increasing demand for water due to a growing county population, finding adequate and sustainable water supplies for both human and ecosystem needs is one of the major challenges we all face.
Kane County staff have committed to water supply planning in the region as evidenced by the extensive scientific investigations conducted by the Illinois State Water Survey (ISWS) and Illinois State Geological Survey (ISGS). These investigations, the first of their kind in the State of Illinois, further defined the three major sources of Kane County's drinking water: the shallow and deep groundwater aquifers and the surface water from the Fox River. These investigations projected the ability of these sources to be utilized for a growing population and also identified their limitations to water withdrawals. These studies also served as a foundation for other counties and communities to build upon for further scientific investigations and water supply planning efforts.
Kane County supports the efforts of CMAP to implement the "Northeastern Illinois Regional Water Supply/Demand Plan - Water 2050", reinforces the water resource recommendations in the CMAP "Go to 2040 Plan", and emphasizes the need to integrate water resources with land use decision-making in the 11 county Northeastern Illinois Regional Water Supply Planning Area.
